OUTSIDE MACHINIST

Description:
Marine outside machinists perform surface preparation and install and test the ship’s mechanical components and systems in stages of new construction, overhaul or repair. In addition, they install machinery plants, propulsion systems, reduction gears, pumps, compressors, assemblies and other systems (i.e. fluid, hydraulic, air). They also operate precision tools and machinery from calipers and micrometers to complex equipment like saws, drill presses and lathes.
*Average base salary does not include overtime or incentives.
Education Options:
Technical School, Community College, Registered Apprenticeship Program, and Industry Training Program
Qualifications:
Able to read and interpret blueprints and specifications. Able to dissemble, repair, reassemble and install various types of equipment and machinery such as pumps, valves, winches and gear boxes. Be knowledgeable in some aspects of air controls and tubing bending. Mechanically inclined and able to use precision, hand and machine tools in setting machinery within appropriate tolerances.
